Welcome to the
Sacred Places Festival

We hope you will decide to visit this lovely part of Sussex and see what our lovely churches have to offer.

Although there may have been Christians here in Roman times, a continuous history of Christianity began in Sussex in 681, when St Wilfrid came from the north to teach the Christian faith to the people living here. While some of our churches have Saxon foundations, there are also superb examples of Norman, Gothic, medieval and modern architecture and church building continues to this day. We have stunning churches for you to visit and members of the congregations who are eager to share their history with you.

There are plenty of things to do and see. The area can truly be called the birthplace of England with the arrival of William the Conqueror in 1066. Castles, abbeys and stately homes await you. But we also have bustling towns with excellent shops, quiet countryside with excellent paths for walkers and cyclists, charming villages and many places perfect for children. Vineyards, gardens and golf clubs abound and there are museums to cater for every interest. For information on accommodation, places to visit and activities in the area, log on to visitsussex.org.uk
